Obama Wants to Bring High-Speed Internet to 99% of U.S. Students Oct 25th 2013, 21:20 NEW YORK — President Barack Obama spoke on Friday at a science and technology-focused high school in Brooklyn, N.Y., to praise the school for ushering in a new way to prepare students for jobs in technology. He also outlined aggressive plans to bring high-speed Internet to every student in the United States "We should give every student access to the world's information," Obama told attendees. "The federal agency is moving forward on a plan to connect 99% of America's students to high-speed Internet within five years. We need to redesign more of our high schools, so that they teach young people the skills required for a high-tech economy." Read more... Think Like an Entrepreneur Oct 25th 2013, 20:32 In a crowded hotel conference room in downtown Brooklyn, N.Y., in October, Jerry Engel told dozens of earnest young scientists and engineers to cut the “scientific crap” and instead identify would-be customers who might care about their products. Frank Rimalovski piled on, urging attendees presenting research that they wanted to turn into businesses — from bone grafts to facial-recognition software — “to focus on the problem, not the solution.” The two men were helping teach an introductory workshop in the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps, a seven-week program that trains researchers to figure out if their academic work has commercial potential. Engel, who serves as the program’s national faculty director, and Rimalovski, managing director of New York University’s Innovation Venture Fund, say I-Corps is a departure from traditional entrepreneurship instruction, which emphasizes business plans and financial projections. The teams spend at least 15 hours a week meeting with potential customers to determine if a market exists for their products. Read more... This list includes the ability to use the handheld PS Vita as a second screen, the PlayStation 4's video capture and online multiplayer. Users will be able to enjoy gaming, Blu-ray and DVD video contents on their PS4 systems, according to the blog post. Users must connect to the Internet to activate these new features, including the DVD player, upon first use. A Sony spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that the patch and one-time Internet connection are requirements for "a playback license management system installed on PS4." Read more... Jeffrey Zients, in his initial public comments since President Barack Obama assigned him the job this week, said the site will be working “smoothly” by then. The project’s management has been reorganized, with UnitedHealth Group’s Quality Software Services unit taking over as lead contractor. Since opening for business this month, the federal exchange serving 36 states has been plagued by delays, error messages and hang-ups that have prevented many customers from completing their enrollment. Ten Democratic senators led by Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire called on the Obama administration to extend the health law’s open-enrollment period beyond March 31. Read more... This would be a great example of how the Internet opens up opportunities for global commerce if it weren't for the fact that those cars, motorcycles and boats did not actually exist. The seven alleged fraudsters were part of a sophisticated group whom the FBI describes as "a band of dangerous cybercriminals."
