Watch Scientists Move Discs With Nothing But Light
Dec 29th 2012, 18:13

Making our dreams of traveling via hoverboard a less-distant reality, Japanese researchers have developed a way to move magnetically levitated graphite discs with nothing but light.

Depending on where the light (in the form of a laser beam) is focused, it controls the direction that the disc travels, according to a study by scientists at Aoyama Gakuin University. The laser changes the temperature of the graphite, which alters how the disc interacts with its magnetic field, resulting in movement.

Check out the video, above, to see the disc in action. Whether this discovery is a precursor to Marty McFly-esque hoverboards, however, remains to be seen.

Dear Today Show, Here's Why You Need to Know Social Media

It's not OK to know nothing about social media or the Internet anymore. It's especially not OK if you are an anchor for a major network TV news program.

This happened after a segment about Randi Zuckerberg's private family photo being shared publicly. Today's Willie Geist, Savannah Guthrie and Natalie Morales -- three TV journalists at the top of their profession -- laughed about their lack of knowledge about Facebook, Twitter and privacy on social media.

"What's the takeaway here?" Guthrie asked after several minutes of banter about technological ignorance. "We don't know either."

You'll have to set up a Google account, which should be fairly easy if you already use Gmail. If you're completely new to Google, consider a couple things before even setting up your phone.

Kate Winslet Is Going Into Space

Fans, celebrities, colleagues and even a few superheroes sent their love to Marvel Comics' "Generalissimo," and Lee's trademark catchphrase, "Excelsior," got the hashtag treatment.

This was a busy year for Lee: The legendary co-creator of classic characters like the X-Men, Iron Man and the Hulk launched a YouTube channel, Stan Lee's World of Heroes, this summer. Instagram Didn't Lose a Quarter of its Users, But it Is at Risk

Mashable OP-ED

You can tell you've really become a part of the national discourse when the New York Post writes a sensationalist story about you.

That's what happened to Instagram Friday morning, when the Post seized on numbers from AppData that showed the photo-sharing service had lost a quarter of its daily active users in the week since its Terms of Service debacle. But the data was misleading for so many reasons, it would make a good case study for a statistics class.

In-Flight Broadband Is Set for Takeoff
Dec 28th 2012, 20:53

Aircraft are one of the few unconnected sanctuaries left in our lives. Unless you shell out the cash for an often-unspectacular bit of airborne bandwidth, a flight typically promises at least a few hours' worth of uninterrupted time to read a great novel, take in a fine film or just sit in deep, relaxing thought.

The notion of the airborne oasis, though, may be coming to an end: The Federal Communications Commission on Friday announced rules changes that will make it easier for airlines to install in-air broadband technology on their aircraft.

Since 2001, airlines have gotten approval for in-flight broadband technology on a per-case basis. The changes announced today will standardize…

OneTesla Is a Singing Tesla Coil
Dec 28th 2012, 20:51

Sing praise for the power of Tesla. No, literally -- make the power of Tesla sing. A group of students started a Kickstarter campaign to fund a DIY solid-state Tesla coil that plays music.

Developed in MIT's Miters hacker space, the group created kits to build a Tesla coil that plays music using sparks. Called oneTesla, the 10-inch coil, when connected through a MIDI port, shoots out sparks that reach nearly two feet. The kit comes complete with all the parts necessary to construct your own. All you need are some basic tools: soldering iron, solder, glue and small hand tools.

Hulu Names Top 5 SNL Sketches of 2012
Dec 28th 2012, 20:17

Hulu subscribers got a little year-end refresher on the year's funniest and most popular Saturday Night Live skits -- according to Hulu, that is. The 38-year-old franchise remains a benchmark for comedy, and despite 2012 seeing the end of an era with the departure of Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig after seven years, Hulu's list proves SNL is still relevant, fresh and funny.

1. Disney Housewives

This spoof of Real Housewives may have been Lindsay Lohan's one moment to shine in 2012, but the real scene-stealer in this perfect parody was Wiig's trashy, vodka-guzzling Cinderella.

2. Undecided Voter

In this hilarious, Onion-inspired pre-election skit, voters ask hard-hitting questi…

One Picture, Many Stories

ESO Photo Ambassador, Babak Tafreshi has captured an outstanding image of the sky over ESO's Paranal Observatory, with a treasury of deep-sky objects.

The most obvious of these is the Carina Nebula, glowing intensely red in the middle of the image. The Carina Nebula lies in the constellation of Carina (The Keel), about 7500 light-years from Earth. This cloud of glowing gas and dust is the brightest nebula in the sky and contains several of the brightest and most massive stars known in the Milky Way, such as Eta Carinae. The Carina Nebula is a perfect test-bed for astronomers to unveil the mysteries of the violent birth and death of massive stars.

Below the Carina Nebula, we see the Wishing Well Cluster (NGC 3532). This open cluster of young stars was named because, through a telescope's eyepiece, it looks like a handful of silver coins twinkling at the bottom of a wishing well. Further to the right, we find the Lambda Centauri Nebula (IC 2944), a cloud of glowing hydrogen and newborn stars which is sometimes nicknamed the Running Chicken Nebula, from a bird-like shape that some people see in its brightest region (see eso1135). Above this nebula and slightly to the left we find the Southern Pleiades (IC 2632), an open cluster of stars that is similar to its more familiar northern namesake.

In the foreground, we see three of the four Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Using the VLTI, the ATs — or the VLT's 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes — can be used together as a single giant telescope which can see finer details than would be possible with the individual telescopes. The VLTI has been used for a broad range of research including the study of circumstellar discs around young stellar objects and of active galactic nuclei, one of the most energetic and mysterious phenomena in the Universe.

scienceyoucanlove:

All of these are nudibranchs, a group of soft bodied mollusks often called Sea Slugs (although the term is often used to describe other groups as well)
They are often noted for their extraordinary colours, which can warn predators that it would be best not to eat them. Some nudibranchs have the ability to incorporate the defence mechanisms of their prey - they eat organisms like jellyfish and sponges and the toxins produced by their food are concentrated into the tissues of the nudibranch.

Frogfish: The Ocean's Disguise Artists

Biomimicry is one of evolution's most mind-blowing avenues of adaptation. It's one thing to adapt thanks to maxing out the biological limits of speed, or selecting for the ever-longer, better-feeding necks of giraffes or the ability to use a new, untapped food source at the bottom of the ocean. But to become another life form? It shows us that natural selection is not only a powerful force, but also a delicate one, fine-tuning things like colors and patterns like only the finest human artists can.

Above are three examples of frogfish biomimicry, a family of fish that separately mimics algae, sponges and even sea urchins. They evolved these costumes as a way to avoid predators and become better predators themselves. Check out an in-depth post about frogfish biomimicry at Why Evolution is True (wait until you see them eat!), and if you want more here's a whole website (Comic Sans warning!) dedicated to frogfish camo.

These guys even give Peeta Mellark a run for his money:
